Contributing to JustDeleteAccount.com
We are transitioning our data source to the MIT-licensed jdm-contrib/jdm project. JustDeleteAccount.com will serve as an alternative frontend using and contrbution to that dataset.
Why the change?
Our goal aligns closely with the mission of jdm-contrib: making account deletion information accessible and maintained by a broad community. Consolidating on a well-maintained, MIT-licensed dataset reduces duplication, increases data quality, and ensures sustainable contributions.
For background, see the discussion that led to this decision: Issue #12.
Where to contribute now
- Data updates (services, links, notes): Please contribute directly to jdm-contrib/jdm.
- Frontend/website improvements: Open issues or PRs in mueller-lukas/justdeleteaccount_com (for this site).
- Bug reports: Use our issue tracker or the jdm-contrib one depending on whether it is UI or dataset-related.
What happens to the old data?
The legacy dataset is archived at mueller-lukas/justdeleteaccount_com for historical reference. Going forward, the site consumes the jdm-contrib dataset.
Licensing: jdm-contrib/jdm is MIT-licensed, which is compatible and allows reuse. We attribute the project and encourage contributions upstream.
Relation to JustDeleteMe
JustDeleteAccount.com started independently in 2020, before I was aware of justdeleteme.xyz. Both projects share the goal of making account deletion easier, but this site approaches it differently.
Key distinctions:
- Search-first pages: Every service has its own subpage at JustDeleteAccount, which surfaces in search engines for queries like "how to delete [service] account". This makes it easier for users not aware of services like JustDeteteAccunt or JustDeleteMe to find the information requiered.
- Feedback loop: Users can vote on whether deletion steps worked, helping refine instructions over time. We encurage maintainers at jdm-contrib/jdm to also use this feedback.
- Open-data alignment: We are shifting to the MIT-licensed jdm-contrib/jdm dataset instead of maintaining a second dataset with similar entries.
- Free API for developers: We expose the dataset via a public API so developers can build tools, extensions, or checks against the same data powering the site.
We respect the established justdeleteme.xyz service and will explicitly acknowledge it (and jdm-contrib/jdm) in our documentation to reduce confusion; this site focuses on a search-friendly frontend and community feedback signals.
Source Code Availability
The JustDeleteAccount.com website source code is not yet publicly available. We are actively hardening the application, improving security and reliability, and removing environment-specific secrets so the code can be released in the near future.
Our intent is to open the code once this hardening work is complete. We will announce the release here and through our public channels. In the meantime, you can suggest features and report issues related to the frontend here, and contribute dataset changes upstream to jdm-contrib/jdm.
How you can help
- Suggest or fix service entries in jdm-contrib/jdm.
- Improve the UI/UX of this frontend, add features, and report issues.
- Vote on services here to provide feedback on the deletion success, this helps improve instructions.
Thank you for helping make account deletion simpler for everyone.
